The Climate Neutral Data Center Pact and Sustainable ITAD

In a landmark move earlier this year, 25 companies, including tech giants Google and Amazon Web Services (AWS), joined forces to sign the groundbreaking Climate Neutral Data Center Pact, signaling a significant stride in the cloud services industry’s sustainability commitment. With signatories such as CyrusOne, Equinix, and NTT, the pact represents a collective pledge to proactively drive the transition to a climate-neutral economy.

Aligned with Climate Sustainable Goals

Aligned with the European Green Deal’s vision to make Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050 and the European Data Strategy’s objective of achieving climate neutrality in EU data centers by 2030, the Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact sets ambitious, measurable targets across five key areas, including the reuse and repair of servers and electrical equipment.

Shifting Perspectives

This industry pact holds immense significance against the backdrop of increasing electronics demand connecting to the cloud and server space. Sustainability has transcended from being an afterthought to a critical business imperative, resonating across corporate and consumer agendas. Data centers, pivotal in this movement, stand poised to mitigate their environmental impact.

Commitment to Change

By prioritizing sustainability and committing to repairing, reusing, and recycling data center equipment, signatories have become vanguards of change in the industry. The pact’s launch saw an influx of 12 additional signatories within its inaugural month, including industry titan Microsoft.

Setting Ambitious Targets

Targets set by data center operators under the pact include assessing 100% of used server equipment for reuse, repair, or recycling and establishing target percentages for repair and reuse by 2025. Such measures aim to significantly reduce carbon emissions associated with production and contribute to achieving carbon neutrality.
